A new driver has been released for NVIDIA GPUs: version 580.80. It adds support for Mafia: The Old Country.
Some of the most interesting changes and fixes include:
- 32-bit games crash when using the DXVK translation layer during startup
- Cyberpunk 2077: Micro-stutter may occur when V-SYNC is enabled
- Dirt 5: Game crashes on startup
- GPU scaling option is missing from the NVIDIA Control Panel / NVIDIA App when a DSC monitor is connected
- GPU video memory runs at a slightly lower speed after enabling NVIDIA Smooth Motion
- On some systems running hybrid graphics mode, the dGPU may not enter sleep mode
The biggest news with this driver release is the mention of NVIDIA’s plans regarding support for Windows 10 and older GPUs. Official support for Windows 10 for regular users ends on October 14th, 2025, and this will also affect NVIDIA’s drivers. To quote the official announcement:
“After a final Game Ready Driver release in October 2025, GeForce GPUs based on Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures will transition to receiving quarterly security updates for the next three years (through October 2028). Our support lifetime for these GPUs reaches up to 11 years, well beyond industry norms.
Also, we’re extending Windows 10 Game Ready Driver support for all GeForce RTX GPUs to October 2026, a year beyond the operating system’s end-of-life, to ensure users continue to receive the latest day-0 optimizations for new games and apps.”
This means that after October 2025, GPUs from the 9xx, 10xx, and Titan V series will receive driver updates only quarterly. These updates will focus primarily on security rather than support for new games and technologies. While it’s still possible that some optimizations for new titles and technologies will be included, they will be lower in priority compared to security fixes.
Seeing support extended for Windows 10 until October 2026 is good news for users (like me) who prefer not to move to Windows 11 and continue using Windows 10. There are plenty of reasons to avoid upgrading, and not many compelling ones to make the switch to 11.
